IAOP Members: Click Here and login to download past meeting presentations for all IAOP chapters Meeting Held Thursday, April 24, 2008 The Chicago Chapter of IAOP, bringing together business persons, consultants and attorneys involved or interested in outsourcing and working or living in the greater Chicago region, held its twelfth meeting on April 24 at the IBM Training Facility in the Hyatt Center. Kirkland & Ellis LLP partner and Chapter Chair Neil Hirshman opened the meeting and welcomed the attendees. The twelfth meeting continued with the theme of the lifecycle of a deal. Chadd Parker, Legal Counsel - Resources from Accenture and Matthew Lovell, an attorney at Kirkland & Ellis began the presentations with a lively discussion about the key elements of an outsourcing contract and some do's and don'ts about the contracting process. Next, Bud Mathaisel, CIO of Achievo drew upon his extensive industry experience in presenting on IT security and its impact on outsourcing. In particular, Bud explained the importance of ISO 27001 certification and the process for certification. The attendees actively engaged with Bud during his presentation and there was a great discussion about how different companies were addressing IT security issues. Neil closed the meeting by requesting volunteers to host future meetings and to sponsor networking receptions. The next meeting is scheduled for July 24 at the Chicago Yacht Club with a networking reception sponsored by Bridge Strategy. The next meeting with continue with the lifecycle of a deal theme. Meeting Held Thursday, January 24, 2008 The Chicago Chapter of IAOP, bringing together business persons, consultants and attorneys involved or interested in outsourcing and working or living in the greater Chicago region, held its eleventh quarterly meeting on January 24 at the South African Consulate. Kirkland partner and Chapter Chair Neil Hirshman opened the meeting and introduced South Africa Consul General Yusuf Omar, who welcomed the attendees and offered some preliminary remarks on South Africa. The eleventh meeting continued with the themes of lifecycle of a deal as well as outsourcing destinations. The presentations began with a lively discussion on the best processes for selecting a provider, including the advantages and disadvantages of the RFP process. The panel was moderated by Matt Smith of EquaTerra and he was joined by panelists Elliot Bruns, Infosys, Walt Wojcik, former CIO and CFO of Northwestern Mutual and Ravin Asar, ABN Amro. Building on that panel discussion, Praful Mittal of Booz Allen Hamilton provided a case study on a company with revenues of over $25B. Praful described the imperatives for them to transform and seek a comprehensive outsourcing strategy and how they went about seeking strategic partners to help in that journey. The meeting then shifted to focus on another outsourcing destination -- South Africa (previous meetings had focused on Poland, India, China, Latin America, Philippines, Canada and Russia). After a brief introduction by Charles Manuel, Consul Economic, Yolande Smit from the Department of Trade and Industry of BPO in South Africa moderated a panel that consisted of Sandile Gwala, Deloitte, Andrew McNair, Merchants UK and Gary Bennett, Virgin Mobile. Each of them shared their insights on the outsourcing industry in South Africa in general and their personal deal experiences in particular. Jeni Stamas, Managing Director, Membership then gave a brief update on the success of IAOP and its growth. Neil closed the meeting by requesting volunteers to host future meetings and to sponsor networking receptions. The next meeting was scheduled for April 24, location TBA. Chairman’s Summary - April 26th Meeting The Chicago Chapter of IAOP, bringing together business persons, consultants and attorneys involved or interested in outsourcing and working or living in the greater Chicago region, held its eighth meeting on April 26 at the offices of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Kirkland partner Gregg Kirchhoefer, standing in for Chapter Chair Neil Hirshman, gave an introduction. IAOP Research Chair Chris Disher gave a brief report on the January Chapter meeting, which had the theme of Data Security and featured a panel discussion on Outsourcing to Russia. The eighth meeting addressed the topics of Knowledge Process Outsourcing, and continued the theme of outsourcing destinations with a panel discussion on Outsourcing to Latin America. The presentations began with IAOP Research Chair Chris Disher, formerly of Booz Allen Hamilton, who presented "Knowledge Process Outsourcing & Latin America: Key Findings from the 2006 ORN Survey.” Building on that presentation, Ashok Divakaran of Booz Allen Hamilton, Bobby Baksh of Microsoft, Dhiraj Rajaram of Mu Sigma and Parth Srinivasa of CDW further defined and discussed more specific elements of KPO, such as consumer insights and analytics, and institutionalizing analytics using global delivery. The meeting then changed direction to focus on another outsourcing destination -- Latin America (previous meetings had focused on Poland, India, China and Russia). Moderated by Vinny Caraballo, the panel consisted of Jorge Best of Softeck, Gregg Butler of CPM, and Ankur Prakash of TCS. Chris then gave a brief update on the success of IAOP and its growth. Gregg and Chris closed the meeting by commenting on the discussion and by soliciting ideas for meeting themes and speakers. They also requested volunteers to host future meetings and to sponsor networking receptions. They reported that the next meeting was scheduled for July 26, location TBA, with a theme of Outsourcing to the Philippines. To access past Chapter meeting presentations, click here. | Chairman’s Summary - July 27th Meeting The Chicago Chapter of IAOP, bringing together business persons, consultants and attorneys involved or interested in outsourcing and working or living in the greater Chicago region, held its fifth meeting on July 27 at the Chicago Yacht Club, with record attendance. Chris Disher of Booz Allen Hamilton, host for the meeting, welcomed all attendees. Chapter Chair Neil Hirshman from Kirkland & Ellis LLP congratulated the Chapter on having reached its first anniversary and gave a brief report on the April Chapter meeting, which had included presentations by Sara Parker Enlow of Vantage Partners, on governance and relationship management, and Philip Franz of Crowe Chizek and Company, on a case study for a global electronics manufacturer, as well as a panel discussion with moderator John Rompon, formerly of HP, and panelists Shabiir Shikora, HCL America, and Erin McCarthy, that addressed the circumstances under which an outsourcing provider would elect to not pursue an opportunity. The theme for the fifth meeting was Outsourcing to India. Yusuf Koita (IBM) presented the speakers that were selected to fulfill the "India Theme" of customers and providers, and encouraged interaction between the speakers and the audience. The presentations for the fifth meeting began with Ramesh Rao of CNA Insurance giving a customer perspective on outsourcing to India, including case studies and many lessons learned. Brenda Sural of Hewitt, and Sanjeev Sharma of Wipro, both providers, offered some insights into their companies' and customers' experiences in outsourcing to India and offered some do's and don'ts to the attendees. Rick Russow of the U.S. India Business Council then provided some economic and political perspective to the U.S.-India trade relationship and discussed some of the legislative activities underway in India. The final speaker was Michael Corbett, Executive Director of the IAOP. Mike reported on IAOP's successful first 18 months and the vision for the future. He also emphasized the Certified Outsourcing Professional program offered through the IAOP. Neil closed the meeting by soliciting ideas for meeting themes and speakers. He also requested volunteers to host future meetings and to sponsor networking receptions. He reported that the theme for the next meeting would be Outsourcing to China. The meeting will be October 19th at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, with HCL sponsoring the networking reception. IAOP Members: Click Here and login to download past meeting presentations Fourth Meeting Chairman’s Summary The Chicago Chapter of IAOP, bringing together business persons, consultants and attorneys involved or interested in outsourcing and working or living in the greater Chicago region, held its fourth meeting on April 20th at the offices of Russell Reynolds Associates. Chapter Chair Neil Hirshman, from Kirkland & Ellis LLP, welcomed the attendees and gave a brief report on the successful Outsourcing World Summit held in Orlando in February. Neil also reported on the results of the third meeting of the Chapter, which had included a presentation by Lucyna Jaremczuk, Consul for Economic and Commerical Affairs from the Consulate General of Poland in Chicago, Mark Koulogeorge, Managing General Partner of MK Capital, and Jonathan Wasylenko, Global Sourcing Office, The Allstate Corporation. The presentations for the fourth meeting began with Sara Parker Enlow of Vantage Partners reporting on a recent study conducted by her organization that comprised the results and analysis of three of their recent surveys, as well as case studies of their clients, input from leading attorneys who advise the parties to outsourcing deals, and interviews with some of the most experienced outsourcing executives around the world. The presentation looked at the problems associated with poor relationship management, the value potential of good relationship management, and some practices companies are employing to more effectively manage their relationships. Philip Franz of Crowe Chizek and Company, LLC continued with a client case study in which a global electronics manufacturer came to Crowe Chizek in the final hour in attempt to save a failing outsourcing strategy. The case study demonstrated the do's and don’ts and lessons learned when implementing an effective outsourcing strategy. John Rompon of HP then moderated a panel comprising Shabiir Shikora, HCL America, Inc., and Erin McCarthy, Lason, entitled, "Not All Business Is Good Business: Reasons Why an Outsourcing Provider Would Elect to Not Pursue an Opportunity." This enlightening presentation and panel discussion, which addressed the circumstances under which an outsourcing provider would elect to not pursue an opportunity, engendered much discussion amongst the attendees. Neil closed the meeting by soliciting ideas for meeting themes and speakers. He also requested volunteers to host future meetings and to sponsor networking receptions. He reported that the next meeting would have an India theme and would be July 27th at the Chicago Yacht Club, with Booz Allen Hamilton sponsoring. The October meeting was tentatively set for October 19th (location TBD) with a China theme.
